Abstract

One tv, one classroom Program: A tool for enhancing grade 5 numeracy skills

Author: De Los Santos ,Edmundo M.

This research determines the effectiveness of One TV, One Classroom Program in the enhancement of the numeracy skills of Grade 5 pupils of Balatas Elementary School, School Year 2019-2020. Specifically, this study determined the following: (a) Analytical Thinking, (b) Critical Thinking, and (c) Problem Solving; (2) the nature of the proposed enhancement program to improve the numeracy skills of the pupils along: (a) Expected Learning Outcomes, (b) Learning Content, (c) Procedures in Teaching-learning Process, and (b) Assessment; (3) the level of numeracy skills of the two groups as revealed in the post test along the same skills; (4) significant differences in the numeracy skills of the pupils based on the pre-test and the post-test result; (5) the extent One Tv, One Classroom Program has improved the numeracy skills of the pupils; and (6) the recommendations drawn based on the results of the study. The study tested the following hypothesis: (1) There are significant differences in the numeracy skills of the pupils between the pre-test and the post-test results; (2) One TV, One Classroom Program is an effective tool for enhancing the numeracy skills among the respondents. Quasi-experimental method was utilized with TV mediated skilbook in improving numeracy skills of the Grade 5 pupils. The statistical tools used were frequency count, percentage, mean, proficiency level, standard deviation, and t-test. Major finding: (1) The level of numeracy skills of the Control and Experimental groups based on the Pre-Test along Analytical thinking, Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving got an overall proficiency level of 70.44% and 70.4% respectively; (2) The proposed enhancement program was aimed at developing mastery of the requisite numeracy skills along analytical thinking, critical thinking and problem solving. The skills book provided activities that required pupils to solve numbers and worded problems by themselves through the use of television; (3) The level of numeracy skills of the Control and Experimental groups based on the Post-test along the same skills revealed an overall proficiency level of 75.15% and 87.88%, respectively; (4) the computed t-value for the difference in Pre-test scores between the Experimental-and Control Groups was indicated by t=.501, p=.618; between the Pre-test and Post test scores of the Experimental group, t=.49.862, p=.000 between the Pre-test and Post-test of the Control groups, t=18.505, p=.000; (5) The difference gain score in the numeracy test of the Control and the Experimental group was indicated by t=7.776, p=.000; and (6) One TV, One Classroom Program will be more effective through the crafted TV mediated skill book. Major conclusions: 1) The Experimental and Control groups had very low proficiency level in numeracy skills along analytical thinking, critical thinking and problem solving skills: 2) The enhancement program focused on improving the numeracy skills of the pupils was an innovation on the use of TV mediated skill book that used graphic and optical materials. It followed interactive and systematic procedure in giving the inputs to the pupils; 3) Based on the Post-test, the level of numeracy skills of the Control group improved to “Fairly Satisfactory” level, while the Experimental group improved to “Very Satisfactory” level; The difference in numeracy skills between the Control and Experimental groups in the Pre-test was not significant; between the Pre-test and Post-test of the Experimental group was significant; between the Pre-test and Post-test of Control Group was significant; between the Post-test of the Control and Experimental groups was significant; (5) The use of One TV, One Classroom Program significantly improved the numeracy skills of the Grade 5 pupils; (6) One Tv, One Classroom is an effective tool with adequate activities given to the pupils through diverse use of animations and transitions.
